In very simple terms, this is a death policy for your horse. All policies are issued for Full Mortality and Theft. The policy can then be endorsed with additional coverage, for example, Major Medical, Colic Surgery, Infertility, etc.
Many horse owners are unaware equine insurance exist. Consider it a protection of your investment. We insure our homes, cars, boats, and a horse can be a substantial investment. Everyone’s situation is different because of the amount paid for the horse. Equine insurance should be one of the first steps taken in protecting your investment.
Because everyone’s situation is different, there are several answers to this question. In the majority of horses, the insured value will initially be what you paid for the horse when purchased. Other ownership scenarios dictate value, which we can answer when you call our office.
All horses that are considered "new” to our office will be required to have a current veterinarian examination. The one exception would be, horses purchased at public auction. For those horses, we only need a catalog page from the auction they were purchased from. After one year, upon renewal, horses insured under a certain value that have had no health issues or surgeries can be renewed with a Health Certificate that is completed by the owner.
The process is very simple and easy. Call our office for a quote and we can email, fax or mail you the Application and Vet Exam you will need to insure the horse. Our forms are also online in the "Forms” section. Once we receive your completed application, vet exam and payment, the horse can be insured.
Any condition that is pre-existing will be excluded for at least twelve months on the new policy. Most exclusions can be removed after a specified number of months, with no re-occurrence and a clean vet exam. It is best to mention any concerns to an agent when you call for a quote and we can discuss possible exclusions at that time.
